Selection and performance of AM superalloys for high-speed flight environments

Abstract In developing the Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process for manufacture of components used in high-speed flight environments, a selection suitable alloys was devised. Using material properties from literature sources, creep-resistant were down-selected based on requirement service high temperature, stress environment and need an alloy using WAAM process. Down-selected alloys, Inconel 718 (IN718), Rene 41 (RE41), Haynes 188 (H188) 625 (IN625), deposited by plasma transferred arc oxygen-controlled environment. Wall structures built, samples extracted mechanical testing. The performance as-deposited then compared against wrought data. Tensile testing at room temperature revealed mismatch, comparison with data, precipitation strengthened IN718 & RE41; however, this mismatch less significant solution H188 IN625. Results that AM did not meet strength varying depending each alloy’s strengthening mechanism. illustrate further processing to return values.
